INDEPENDENT RAIL TOUR NEW YORK & MONTREAL

8 Days/7 Nights – Gateway: New York

1, 2 & 3: New York, NY

Welcome to “The Big Apple!” New York, a mere rock of an island, is the nation’s largest city and commercial center. From Wall Street’s stock exchange to the galleries of SoHo, the sparkling diamond district and the cobblestone streets in the South Street Seaport, New York has something for everyone. Take the ferry to Ellis Island and view the Statue of Liberty, which welcomed immigrants to the land of freedom. Explore the neighborhoods, take in the bright lights of Broadway, shop on Fifth Avenue and eat your way through Chinatown, Little Italy, or New York’s famous deli’s.

3 nights New York.

4, 5 & 6: Montreal (372 mi/595 km)

This morning board AMTRAK’s Adirondack Train to travel through the lush wine country of the Hudson Valley, and northward through the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. This trip has to be one of the most beautiful day trips on a North American Train. The scenery along the Hudson River is spectacular and near Croton on Hudson you’ll have a good view of the United States Military Academy at West Point. After Albany the train travels along the shores of Lake Champlain and there is a good view of Fort Ticonderoga, used during the Revolutionary War to defend the area. Cross the U.S./Canada border to arrive in Montreal for a 3-night stay. Montreal is truly an experience; old world charm, French joie de vivre and a modern style all its own. This is really two cities in one; above ground is the largest concentration of stores in the country, underneath is miles of commercial space; every nook and cranny filled with more shops and boutiques. Montreal’s 360 years of history have left an indelible mark on the vibrant character of the city. It’s been a French settlement, a British stronghold, and today the world’s second-largest French speaking city. Over the years European flair has blended with North American savoir-faire to create the story of Montreal, a rich tradition, a mosaic of cultures, and a fierce passion for the future.
